become a nurse

Are you someone who cares and wants to make a difference? Then becoming a nurse might just be the perfect career for you. Imagine being that person who helps and supports a patient all the way through from when they first need help and assistance until they are fully healed.

Usually, when you think of working in medicine or healthcare, thinking about becoming a nurse might not be your first thought. But nursing really is one of the most rewarding and versatile careers out there! There are so many areas of medicine and healthcare where you can do your bit and be a nurse, from children’s nursing to adult nursing and mental health nursing through to learning disability nursing, there are plenty of rewarding options.

Nurses are often responsible for a wide variety of patients, so they need to be highly organised, flexible, observant, able to assess patients and take responsibility for determining the best course of action. Did you know that nursing is one of the most employable degrees to hold in the UK? With most graduates gaining employment within the first 6 months of completing the course.

How to Become a Nurse

First things first, you need to decide which field of nursing you would like to enter into, as your specialism in nursing will decide exactly what qualifications you are going to need, but as a general guide you’re going to need at least two (usually three) A-levels, Highers, or equivalent qualifications at Level 3, plus supporting GCSEs including English, maths, and a science (usually biology or human biology). Courses often specify preferred or essential A level, Higher, or equivalent subjects, such as one science (Biology) or social science (Psychology).

So once you know which field of nursing you want to specialise in, you need to check what the entry requirements are, this can be done with the university directly or with UCAS. A simple Google search will find you the information you need on how to become a nurse in that field.
